Agile Wallaby
(Young female with joey)
Macropus agilis

Female Agile Wallabies breed
around the age of 18 months. Breeding can occur throughout the year. Gestation
is 30 days. Pouch life is seven to eight months and they are weaned at 10 to 12
months. Females usually mate shortly after giving birth and the resultant
blastocyst remains dormant until the pouch is vacated by the previous
joey.
The Agile wallaby is
gregarious, forming groups numbering up to ten, however much larger groups can
often be found on feeding areas.
They are the most common member of
the kangaroo family found in the Wet Tropics of Australia. They are also found
in the southern and
eastern lowlands of Papua New Guinea. Feeding mainly on native grasses they will,
in the dry time of the year when food is scarce,
often dig into the soil to obtain and eat the roots of these grasses.
Unfortunately the seemingly abundance of the Agile Wallaby and its perceived
effect on
crops and pastures has led to this beautiful animal being declared a pest
species in most farming areas.
