Short-beaked Echidna
Tachyglossus aculeatus

The platypus and the
echidna are the two surviving members of the Order Monotremata. The echidna is
one of our most successful creatures, being found throughout Australia including
Tasmania. In the southern parts of the continent where temperatures are much
cooler the echidna has fur on the legs and between the quills.
